Sugar Addiction

Drug use is a growing problem within our society today. Illicit drugs including alcohol, cocaine, and methadone are probably some of the more well known abused drugs, but what about those everyday drugs that we use in our life routines? Is it true that people can get addicted to substances such as caffeine and sugar? Well let me pose a scenario. When I moved out to California, my mother spent the week helping to get me settled. Throughout the week she constantly had a headache and was very irritable and we figured out on her final day the symptoms were because her body was in withdrawal. That’s right, her 20 plus years of coffee drinking had caused her body to react when she wasn’t fueling it with the normal dose of caffeine she had been giving herself for years. Another popular addiction that many people get attached to is sugar. Apparently, the sweetness of sugar releases dopamine in the brain causing people to become dependent on the taste. Sugar and caffeine can drastically have an effect on healthy living and it is important people be aware of the harms that come attached to these everyday substances. So the next time someone asks if you’ve ever done drugs, you may want to think long and hard about that answer, because you may be addicted without even knowing it.
