All About The Greatest Architect In Scotland
The 2nd child of eleven kids, Charles Rennie Mackintosh showed aflairn aptitude for design from an early age.
Deciding against following his dad into the city police force, Mackintosh became apprenticed to Glasgow architect John Hutchinson.
That work would have been hard enough, but Mackintosh also joined up to night classes at the Glasgow school of Art where his talent was quickly recognized, winning prizes, including a travelling grant to Italy, France and Belgium.
It was as a student that Mackintosh defied Roman and Greek classicism in favour of a Baronial style.
Mackintosh used normal design in a way that fitted with the latest mood, experimented with light and space and made impressive but functional buildings.
Mackintosh drew influence too from japanese art, with his frequent use of motifs such as the stylised rose, which became the hallmark of his design.
