Diamond carat is about the weight of the stone.  A carat equals one-fifth of a gram.  This is the unit of measurement that is further divided into 100 “points” since diamonds are usually small. A half carat. .5ct, weight 100 milligrams while a five carat diamond weighs one gram.  

The ideal diamond color is clear with no hue or shade.  The rating D refers to colorless diamonds while Z is for deeply colored stones.  Beyond Z rating, diamonds are called fancy.  Usually the trained eye of a master determines these grades but sometimes a machine called a Colorimeter is used.

In certain instances, diamond cuts may have greater impact on grading than its clarity. Maximum brilliance makes the diamond more valuable, even if it is heavy.  A poorly cut diamond is worth less.  

It is often believed diamond clarity is the most important aspect of diamond grading.  It is dependent on the blemishes, inclusions and imperfections in the diamond.  These include feathering, clouding and other imperfections that make the diamond less clear or brilliant.  The more blemishes and inclusion, the lower the rarity of the stone.  Usually clarity is determined under 10X magnification. The final grade is typically based on how easy it is to see the inclusions and blemishes.
