A Commentary On “With Friends Like These. . .”
That the various governments currently looking at condeming the 1915 massacre are doing so now is giving Turkey pretext to get nasty with Armenia and Armenians this week,(aside from the ebb and flow of intensity, nothing has changed since the Turks rode out of central Asia on a binge of colonialist imperialism) a good question is why did they wait until now? While Genocide was amply documented in 1915 by a then neutral United States as well as by their German ally, World War One distracted world attention. Stories of these war crimes a frequent topic in newspapers in this country in the 1920′s, yet our country did nothing while we did not have diplomatic employee motivation relations with Turkey. FDR could have made Turkey admit to the Genocide as a condition for restoring diplomatic relations, but he did not, and restored diplomatic relations. There has always been a diplomatic reason not to do it this year, but if not now, When?
Given todays Democrats general indifference to genocide, why now indeed? At a guess, Democrats realize they are in political trouble and big states such as California are in play this year, and rightly calculate a resolution recognizing the 1915 massacre as genocide could easily sway a hundred thousand votes in California. lt might save a Democrat Seantor and a few Representatives there. That is the only reason it is in play today. If Democrats were serious, Congress would have recognized the 1915 massacre as genocide back in the days Woodrow Wilson was President. As far as I am concerned, Recognition today would be more than a few days late and more than a few dollars short. Democrats had their chance under Wilson, Republicans under Harding. They didn’t act then. My father was one of the youngest survivors, if he were alive today, he would be approaching his 99th birthday.
